Planning your School Essays

Senior year can be filled with many tasks to complete before heading off to college. One is to plan out the school essays that will need to be completed. This begins with selecting the schools that you are planning to apply to for the following year.

Once those are selected, reading the essay choices, their requirements and finding out about the due dates is next. Then work on a schedule to make sure that everything is done in ample time for each. Consider the following to help keep you on track:

  • Mark on a calendar or a list to show which applications are due on which dates so that writing time can be managed well.
  • Are there any essays that can be used for more than one school? If there are some ideas that could work for more than one school, that can help with the planning time.
  • Read the prompts and instructions carefully and make notes to remind yourself about the critical points that need to be included.
  • Tackle one at a time so that you can dedicate your thoughts to the essay at hand.
  • Make rough drafts and then give them a day or so before revisiting them. This will help you to catch issues with how the essay is constructed and any grammar or punctuation problems.
  • Finish one before moving on to another essay.
  • Get a reader - have someone read your essays. The reader's fresh perspective can give you feedback about the topic, any grammar issues or awkward phrasing.
  • Make sure that the essays are done in time to put everything together in the application. You don't want to cram anything in this process because it may make affect the quality of your work.
  • Reread the essay requirements and your essay to make sure you have thoroughly addressed all the points or aspects required.

When planning out your application essays it is important to make a schedule and stick to it so that you can give yourself enough time to craft excellent essays and time to make sure that they portray you in the best light. By planning your essay schedule and giving ample time to plan each essay itself, there will be plenty of time to edit and to polish the pieces and make them shine. If the essays shine, then so will you as an applicant.
