A Guide To Article Review Writing: 5 Basic Requirements

An article review is a formal paper, so you must obey certain rules when writing it. The problem is the fact that the vast majority of educators have their own sets of requirements towards this piece of academic writing. Therefore, the first thing you should do is t talk to your teacher. Discuss this matter in great detail in order to make sure that you avoid making any mistakes.

The basic rules usually observed in article review writing are:

  1. Start with a summary.
  2. The first paragraph of your paper should present a short summary of the main points discussed in the text. Please note that you shouldn't go in too many details as your goal here is to catch the readers' interest. Include only information about the main highlights of the article so that the audience will want to know more. Be concise as this paragraph shouldn't be more than 3-5 sentences long. It would be easier to write this paragraph after you complete the body of your review.

  3. Explain the significance of the article.
  4. This is essential and may even become the main focus of your paper. You need to identify the type of the article you analyze and explain what good it really does to readers and why. The text in question may contain shocking new information, or fill a certain blank in the existing knowledge of the subject, or simply rehash the known facts. You need to tell you readers what it does exactly and how this particular article influences the field of study as a whole.

  5. Provide your own evaluation of the article.
  6. At the end of the text, you will need to offer your own views on the text and its significance. Analyze its integrity and relevance. Does it offer complete information? If there are some blanks left, what kind of research is needed to fill them?

  7. Analyze the text itself.
  8. The content is not the only thing you need to analyze. The language used in the text also plays an important part. Therefore, one paragraph of your own paper should be dedicated to analyzing the style, tone, and grammar of the article you review.

  9. Offer another summary in the conclusion.
  10. In essence, your conclusion should be an inverted version of the introduction. In this paragraph, you should reiterate the same points and remind the readers how you proved them. However, this section should be original, so you'll need to invest a lot of effort in expressing the same ideas with different words.
